Q: I want to duplicate a multiple
partition disk drive.
A: From the "Greystone Standard Jobs" screen select
the location of the SRCE and Target drives, that is,
SRCE=Int(internal) EXT(external) or PAR(parallel) And Target is INT,
EXT, or Par. Then select "Smart Copy". The target drive will contain
the same partition structure as the source drive. The partition
sizes on the source drive will be adjusted to fit onto the target
drive. For example, given a source drive with three partitions using
40%, 35% and 25% of the disk, the target drive will also be
partitioned with three partitions that use 40%, 35% and 25% of the
disk. When a FAT16 partition on a target disk will be larger than 2
GB, the partition is limited to 2 GB and additional partitions are
allocated on the target drive. A FAT32 file system will support
partitions of any size.
Q: What happens if an error is
detected on a target drive or source drive during the duplication
process?
A: If the error is detected on the
source or target drive, the duplication process will halt and an
error box with the detected error will be displayed. If the error is
detected on a target drive, the drive is disabled and the
duplication process continues. At the end of the duplication
process the drive with the error is reported as a bad drive and the
error is logged to the log file if error logging is enabled.
Q: When should I connect the disk
drives to the D-101?
A: Greystone Data Systems recommends starting the
D-101 and waiting for the "Greystone Standard Jobs" screen to appear
before connecting the source and target drive(s).
Q: When I duplicate my Windows 95 1.6
GB disk drive to a 6 GB disk drive, I end up with three partitions
on the 6 GB disk drive. I only want one partition on the 6 GB disk
drive. What should I do?
A: Your Windows 95 1.6 GB disk is formatted with the
'FAT16' file system. The FAT16 file system supports partitions up to
2 GB. When duplicating the FAT16 file system, the target disk is
automatically partitioned into 2 GB partitions. In other words, a 6
GB disk will be partitioned into three 2 GB partitions. This is a
limitation of the FAT16 file system. A possible solution is to
obtain the FAT16-to-FAT32 converter from the Microsoft ® Web site
and upgrade the source disk drive to the FAT32 file system. The
FAT32 file system will support a single partition on any size disk
drive.
Q: I want to duplicate NTFS or Windows
2000, can I do it?
A: Yes. The NTFS partitions on the target disk drives
will be the same size as the partition on the source drive. The
remaining space on the target drive is available for allocation
using FDISK or Disk Administrator. Target drives must be the same
size, or larger than the source drive. If the target drives are the
same model and same physical geometry as the source drive, then it
is recommended that the 'Mirror Copy' mode be used for the
duplication.
Q: I want to duplicate NTFS to
targets that are larger in size than the master drive and expand the
partition size. Can I do this?
A: This can only be accomplished with the optional
"NTFS Smart Option". That software will allow copies to larger
drives, expands the NTFS partitions proportionally, and copies
only the data in the NTFS partition. Contact Greystone Sales to
purchase this option.
Q: How do I contact Greystone Data
Systems?
A: For Technical Support call: (510) 429-5848 Monday -
Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PST For Sales, call: (510) 429-5848.
To order by Fax call: (510) 429-5844
Q: How do I get a Smart Option Key?
A: When the Smart Option Key entry box is displayed,
write down the internal serial number that is displayed. Also write
down the serial number that is on the back of the duplicator. Call
Greystone Data Systems at (510) 429-5848 and ask to speak to the
person responsible for Smart Option sales.
Q: How do I activate a Smart Option?
A: At the MAIN MENU, arrow down to the SMART OPTIONS.
Press SEL and the NTFS and DIAGNOSTIC options will be displayed.
Select the option you want to activate and enter the Smart Option
Key required. ESC back to the previous screen and an X should appear
to show activation.
Q: 1. When the copy operation is
started, the Source drive spins up, but the display shows "Source
Drive Info, MFG= No Drive" and pressing "START" will not work.
2. When the copy operation is started, the Source
drive spins up and is identified but when Start is pressed, the
drives are shut down and the display shows "Drive not responding"
and "ERROR=BAD TARGET".
A: All drives must be set (following the drive
manufacturers instructions) as MASTER DRIVES. If set as SLAVE DRIVES
or set to CABLE SELECT, the copy operation will fail. A few drives
(example, some Western Digital Drives) have to be set with NO JUMPER
installed.
Q: After duplicating, why doesn’t the
Target drive boot when installed in the computer?
A: There are three possible translation modes in the
"Set System Options". They are:
-
ENABLE LBA XLATE
-
ENABLE INT13 XLATE
-
Neither
One of these three translations should always be
successful. Repeat the copy with each translation mode and the drive
should boot from one of the three. |
